The castle keep is seen to the north-east, closer and from a little lower and further west in the West Okement Valley than in the sketch on folio 62 recto (D09868; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 67). Eric Shanes has noted the present sketch as relating to the watercolour Okehampton, Devonshire of about 1826 (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne),1 engraved in 1828 for the series Picturesque Views in England and Wales.2 Although the match is not precise, it is perhaps the nearest among Turner’s various studies. The watercolour, with the trees relocated and a man shooting rabbits in the foreground, may be an amalgam of different aspects.
For other views of the town and castle at Okehampton, see under folio 59 recto (D09814; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 22).
