At the centre, partly eclipsing the keep beyond to the north, is the gateway to Launceston Castle which still stands at the junction of St Thomas Road and Western Road. Later buildings now preclude the viewpoint, and the tower to the right does not survive. On the left, on the far side of the valley to the north-west, is the tower of St Stephen’s Church, St Stephen-by-Launceston.
For other views of the castle and the surrounding town, see under folio 70 recto (D09873; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 72).
