This sketch is a slighter variant of the already rather summary ink composition on folio 14 recto (D09910). Both may relate to Turner’s painting Crossing the Brook, exhibited in 1815 (Tate N00497),1 but in the present, more generalised drawing, there is also a sense of another painting, Apullia in Search of Appullus (Tate N00495), exhibited at the British Institution in 1814.2 There is a discussion of the relationship between the paintings and various drawings in the present sketchbook under D09910.
