With the page turned horizontally, Turner’s view is to the north-west across Stonehouse Lake. At the lower left are mills built on a bridge then partly demolished on the near side in a dispute over toll charges;1 the lake was later filled in and is now playing fields, and the mills do not survive on the later Mill Bridge. The area was then mostly open land between Plymouth Dock (later Devonport) to the west, Plymouth to the east and Stonehouse to the south of the tidal lake.
In the distance are the scattered buildings of Lower and Higher Stoke; the hill is now largely built over; at one time a railway line ran across it to Devonport. The land in the foreground, then known as Five Fields, is now occupied by Wantage Gardens. The mills also appear in the sketch of Stoke Damerel on folio 3 recto (D09220), under which related views are discussed.
The subjects as far as folio 127 recto (D09358) are all identified or presumed sites within a few miles in and around Plymouth, suggesting a series of fairly short excursions.
