This outline sketch was drawn on one of the large loose sheets of grey-washed English paper that Turner took with him to France and Switzerland in 1802. This narrow mountain stream, its bed strewn with boulders and its banks overhung with trees, is probably the Gorges du Guiers Mort in the Chartreuse.
