Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this sketch continues across folio 57 verso opposite (D22082; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 55c). Here the tower of St Editha’s Church is shown to the right, of the prospect towards Ladybridge and Tamworth Castle (apparently less prominent here than in reality) along the River Anker. Later developments and trees now obscure the view.
There are related views on folios 56 verso and 57 recto (D22080, D22081; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 55a, 55b). For Turner’s England and Wales watercolour and other views of Tamworth, see under folio 52 verso (D22072; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 51c).
