J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

Ian Warrell has tentatively suggested Chatsworth House as the subject,1 and this seems to be correct by comparison with the more developed view on folio 54 recto (D22249), showing the view from the north-west with the Tudor Hunting Tower above to the left. In the present view, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the tower is partly obscured by the trees in the foreground, and has been drawn twice, while the characteristic silhouette of the tall belvedere at the end of Chatsworth’s north wing appears to be indicated at the foot of the slope, with the lower profile of the main block to its right. The composition is repeated towards the bottom right, separated by horizontal and vertical pencil lines. For other views of Chatsworth, see under folio 43 verso (D22231).
