Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this study appears to show fishermen gathered round small boats drawn up on a beach, perhaps with a sailing boat very loosely indicated beyond. There are various studies of fishermen, fish markets and coastal views in the sketchbook, particularly on adjacent pages at this end, as set out in the Introduction.
The blank recto is numbered by John Ruskin in red ink ‘32’ and stamped ‘CCLXXXI – 32’.
