D00767
Turner Bequest XXX 33a
Pencil on white wove paper, 126 x 108 mm

Turner scholar C.F. Bell identified these details, studied by Turner with the page turned vertically, as being situated at the east end of the cathedral.1 The slight note of a recumbent effigy is difficult to interpret, but does not correspond to the tomb of Bishop Sherbourne (died 1536) in the south choir aisle, or of Bishop Story (died 1503) on the north side of the choir.
1
MS note ‘East End. CFB’ by A.J. Finberg in his annotated copy of Finberg 1909, I, p.61 (Prints and Drawings Room, Tate Britain).
Technical notes:
There is a dark stain at the top right, which has soaked through from the recto (D00766).
