Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Front Cover:
Inscription by Turner: Place Names c.1797
D40560
?Goauche on calf leather cover of sketchbook, 277 x 220 mm
Inscribed by Turner in brush and ?goauche ‘Derbyshire | Yorkshire | Durham | Northumberland | Tweeddale Scot | Lincolnshire | Northamptonshire’ across centre, descending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg notes that the inscription was ‘in colour’;1 this is no longer apparent, and the effect of biting into the leather suggests an iron-gall ink. A similar medium was probably used for the inscription on the cover of the contemporary Tweed and Lakes sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XXXV).
