The subject is drawn with the page turned horizontally. David Hill notes that Castle Mill, prominent in the foreground of Turner’s drawing, was a newly reconstructed cotton mill. A watercolour view of Knaresborough from a slightly different point, but also including the mill, forms a plate in the series of Picturesque Views in England and Wales (private collection).1
