Finberg conjectured this scene, drawn with the page turned horizontally, was ‘at or near Ripon, on banks of River Nidd’, but the Nidd runs nowhere near Ripon, whose two rivers are the Ure and the Skell; and the hilly scenery suggests somewhere further north, perhaps, like the drawings on the following pages, near Richmond; though the atmosphere seems to be coastal and, as David Hill suggests, this may be a view near Tynemouth or on the Northumberland coast; see the subjects from folio 33 recto to 59 recto (D00938–D00964; Turner Bequest XXXIV 32–56). Hill points out that the boats in the foreground are colliers.
