Turner here studies the crossing of the priory church at Lindisfarne, with its remarkable ‘flying’ arch soffit, ornamented with zigzag mouldings which are indicated with great economy. The nave and distant west end, sketched in outline here, are rendered in more detail on folio 55 recto (D00960; Turner Bequest XXXIV 52).
