For another drawing of Jedburgh Abbey see folio 67 recto (D00972; Turner Bequest XXXIV 63). David Hill points out that in this drawing Turner adopts exactly the viewpoint of one of Thomas Girtin’s watercolours of Jedburgh, which may well have been one of those Girtin (1775–1802) showed at the Royal Academy just before Turner set out for the north.
