The mountaineer and art historian Peter Bicknell described this view, drawn with the page turned horizontally, as showing Borrowdale and Stonethwaite, with Glaramara beyond.1 Turner scholar David Hill concurs, but suggests that it shows ‘Rosthwaite Fell and Glaramara from the road under Castle Crag’, that is from a point slightly farther north, and suggests that Turner made it on his return from Longthwaite (see folio 35 recto; D01090; Turner Bequest XXXV 88). Hill based his opinion on the fact that weather conditions appear to have improved, as they frequently do during the afternoon after a cloudy morning, and on the ‘soft evening sunlight’ that is apparently depicted. But see comments on Turner’s colouring procedures under folio 40 recto (D01086; Turner Bequest 84).
