The view, drawn with the page turned horizontally, is taken from the western end of Buttermere, looking south-east down the lake. Other studies made at Buttermere are on folios 40 recto and 41 recto (D01086, D01030; Turner Bequest XXXV 84, 28); see also folio 42 recto (D01031; Turner Bequest XXXV 29). Jerrold Ziff implies1 that the drawing Turner made on folio 40 (D01086) is a coloured version of this subject, but the two show different views.
