Characteristically, Turner here chooses a viewpoint that yields a comprehensive view of the main antiquities of the town centre in a telling composition. Drawn with the page turned horizontally, the castle and parish church are seen crowning the hill; the church in the left middle-distance is St John’s, with a recently constructed classicising steeple, and the medieval bridge over the River Lune is visible at the extreme right. Other views of Lancaster are on folios 79 recto and 80 recto (D01066, D01067; Turner Bequest XXXV 64, 65).
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram; inscribed by A.J. Finberg in pencil ‘141.67’ and in a different hand in pencil ‘?67’ [sic].
