This scene in a town with a large Perpendicular church may have been drawn in Lincolnshire on Turner’s return from the north in 1797; however, it is more probably one of the towns he visited in connection with his work on the Oxford Almanack towards the end of the decade. For the dating of this drawing and contemporary views in the Oxford area, see under Tate D02358 (Turner Bequest L Q).
