This study was developed from the slight sketch of Bolton ruins from the south that Turner made in his Tweed and Lakes sketchbook (Tate D01070; Turner Bequest XXXV 68). It is handled in an experimental manner similar to that shown in a study of Kirkstall Abbey (Tate D08263; Turner Bequest CXXI H), and probably dates from the same time, about 1799, though the support is a thicker, coarser paper that he also used on the 1797 tour in the park at Harewood (for which see the separate subsection).
Verso:
Blank; some blue paint splashes; not stamped.
