Here Turner has made a quick jotting of a parade of cottages, houses and buildings on a lane close to or perhaps within the city of Oxford. A similar sketch can be found on folio 1 verso (Tate D28292; Turner Bequest CCLXXXIX 1 a).
Part of a panoramic drawing of the city on the folio opposite (Tate D28348; Turner Bequest CCLXXXIX 29 a) has been continued onto this sheet near the gutter of the sketchbook.
