This slight and undeveloped sketch depicts the River Main, a right tributary of the Rhine which flows away from Mainz at the east of the city. Turner has labelled the drawing with the river’s name and also with the word ‘Raft’, the type of boat to which he refers in folio 70 recto (Tate D28489; Turner Bequest CCXC 70).
