This swiftly rendered sketch shows the Castle Marxburg atop the cliff in the distance and the town of Rhens, upstream from Braubach, on the right. Turner has annotated the view with the inscription ‘Marx’, to represent Marxburg, and a note on the atmospheric qualities of the scene: ‘smoke’ and ‘the Light the Yellow’.
