The viewpoint is probably a tavern at Llanfair, on the old road from Carmarthen to Llanstephan. Turner would naturally have stopped at this point for refreshment if not for lodgings. The spectacular view is now obtainable from a private garden; the road has been rerouted along the valley. See also the drawing on folio 36 recto (D01278; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 27), and the slight sketch in the Dynevor Castle sketchbook (Tate D01574–D01575; Turner Bequest XL 65a–66). Another drawing which may show Llanstephan is in the Swans sketchbook (Tate D01731–D01732; Turner Bequest XLII 56–57).
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
