Wigmore Castle, originally large, dates from the twelfth century and later and is comprehensively ruined, but makes a number of picturesque compositions on its hill away from the little village of Wigmore, north of Leominster in the north of Herefordshire. Another study which probably shows it is the slight sketch on the following leaf, folio 100 recto (D01319; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 65).
Technical notes:
There are paint smears along the edges of the page and a band of colour along the outer edge (below the drawing) from where wash was applied to the watercolour on folio 98 recto (D01343; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 89).
