Like D35447 (Turner Bequest CCCLIX 12), this sketch features mounted figures passing through hilly scenery, although this time the company is far more numerous accompanied by a carriage. The density of the traffic and its progress under a pair of arches gives the impression of a festive procession. Evidence for a possible connection between these scenes and Queen Victoria’s visit to the region is set out in the Introduction to the tour.
