This is an unexpectedly tentative drawing, and rather slight, though it must have been undertaken to amplify the information that Turner had collected in his other drawings of the ruins of Malmesbury Abbey in the contemporary Hereford Court sketchbook, such as Tate D01256, D01258 and D01328 (Turner Bequest XXXVIII 7, 9, 74).
The subject is continued on folio 12 recto (D01483). A more confident and elaborate study of the abbey from a slightly different viewpoint is on folios 13 verso–14 recto (D01485–D01486).
