Turner made two pencil drawings of this view in his contemporary Hereford Court sketchbook (Tate D01277, D01278; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 26, 27). The viewpoint appears to have been a staging post at the top of a hill on the old road from Carmarthen to the coast. Turner has somewhat exaggerated the size of the castle in relation to the panorama. The drawing is continued on folio 68 recto opposite (D01575; Turner Bequest XL 66).
