Joseph Mallord William Turner A Road among Mountains 1798

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 16 Verso:
A Road among Mountains 1798
D01707
Turner Bequest XLII 32
Pencil on buff laid paper, 174 x 125 mm
Stamped in black ‘XLII – 32’ top right, upside down

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the subject is continued on folio 17 recto opposite (D01708; Turner Bequest XLII 33). Although it is very possible that this sketch was drawn while Turner was in motion, it is unlikely to have been done at the same time as the drawing on the preceding opening, folios 15 verso–16 recto (D01705–D01706; Turner Bequest XLII 30–31), since the artist would hardly have changed his drawing implement in such circumstances. On the other hand, the rapid pencil notation is similar to that of some notes made among the Black Mountains in the contemporary Dynevor Castle sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XL).
