Joseph Mallord William Turner Rocky Cliffs, Seen from Below 1798-9

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 62 Verso:
Rocky Cliffs, Seen from Below 1798–9
D01799
Turner Bequest XLII 124
Pencil and gouache on buff laid paper, 174 x 125 mm
Stamped in black ‘XLII – 124’ bottom left

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The drawing is continued on folio 63 recto opposite (D01800; Turner Bequest XLII 125). The following view, on folios 63 verso–64 recto (D01801–D01802; Turner Bequest XLII 126–127), may have been made at the same place.
The inscription on D01800 is difficult to interpret; it perhaps reads ‘Tivolly’, but may not refer to Tivoli at all, since Turner knew that Italian site only from drawings he had copied under the aegis of Dr Thomas Monro (see the ‘Monro School c.1794–8’ section of this catalogue), it would seem surprising that he should be reminded of it in this context.
