One of the series of Salisbury views commissioned by Richard Colt Hoare, this is a study, based on a pencil drawing (Tate D02349; Turner Bequest L H), of a fifteenth-century porch removed in 1791 by James Wyatt from outside the north transept of Salisbury Cathedral. It was embellished (presumably by Wyatt) with a short hexagonal spire and pinnacles, and placed as a garden ornament in the grounds of College House, Bourne Hill, seat of Henry Penruddocke Wyndham.1 The finished watercolour is at the British Museum, London.2
