This is a sheet from the Brocklesby Mausoleum sketchbook, of which seven pages survive, disbound; see under D05159 (Turner Bequest LXXXIII 1). The subject is a version in Coade stone of the Borghese Vase (Musée du Louvre, Paris), one of the most famous of the antiquities admired by Grand Tourists in Italy. The vase had been copied several times by Mrs Eleanor Coade’s manufactory at Lambeth in her patent ‘secret’ artificial stone,1 and it is likely that this example was designed by James Wyatt, who is recorded as having produced other Coade urns installed at Brocklesby. Another example of the Coade Borghese Vase is at Kedleston, Derbyshire, seat of the Curzon family.
