Finberg could not determine whether this sheet, used horizontally, shows mountains or clouds; it should possibly be viewed the other way up, as Ruskin seems to have thought. If so, the inscription would read ‘X7’. For his reference to the ‘Schaffhausen book’ see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
