Here Turner shows the point at which the Meuse (at left) and the Sambre (at right) join. The Pont de Jambes, which crosses the Meuse, connects the district of Jambes to the promontory atop which Namur’s citadel stands (Tate D20104; Turner Bequest CCXVII 12a). At the foot of this lofty promontory is the Hospice Saint-Gilles, identifiable by a teardrop-shaped spire (see also Tate D20105; Turner Bequest CCXVII 13). To the right of the bridge crossing the Sambre is the cursory outline of a spired tower: most likely the Tour de Saint-Jacques and its twelfth-century belfry. There is a small detail of buildings and a cupola at top right.
This view is very briefly continued on the folio opposite (Tate D41508).
