The first sketch is a record of the sky just before sunrise: a ‘Beautiful cold grey’ dotted with ‘Pink clouds’. Below it is a swiftly rendered view of a windmill on the coast. The final sketch is cloud study: the sky is ‘grey’ with the exception of a single ‘Streak of orange’. Similar studies are found on the folio opposite (Tate D19582; Turner Bequest CCXVI 16).
