In these swiftly rendered and dynamic pencil sketches Turner records scenes of daily life and labour close to the Pont des Arches at Liège (see Tate D19636–D19637; Turner Bequest CCXVI 43a–44). Figures sit and converse in boats filled with wares moored to the banks of the Meuse; ‘Women [walk] along the quay’ and ‘Horse Carts’ trundle by. Similar figure studies continue on the opposite folio (Tate D19639; Turner Bequest CCXVI 45).
