Cecilia Powell has identified these slight sketches as showing the Meuse Valley, taken from a vantage point above Charleville in the French Ardennes (see also Tate D19684; Turner Bequest CCXVI 67a). With the sketchbook orientated in accordance with the foliation, a view of Charleville is seen at top left, annotated with rather illegible inscriptions relating to the roads. Below this sketch is a view of a ‘wood[ed]’ valley and a diligence coach at right. The remaining views are profiles of Charleville and the surrounding landscape; these have all been drawn with the sketchbook turned upside down.
