Finberg titled this page of drawings ‘Views of a ruined abbey’: it actually holds views of the fortifications on the Bock ridge at Luxembourg and the eighteenth-century two-storey Pont du Château which connects two of the Bock’s cliffs (see also D20249, D28274, D28277, D28280–D28281; Turner Bequest CCXXI P, CCLXXXVIII 60a, 62, 63a–64).
This sheet, and its recto: Tate D18471; Turner Bequest CCX 90, was removed from the present sketchbook and bound into the Brighton and Arundel sketchbook (Turner Bequest CCX) at some point in the nineteenth or early twentieth century.
