This swiftly executed sketch showing a coastal view was possibly taken in northern France as Turner made his way towards Dunkirk (see Tate D19911; Turner Bequest CCXVI 180). A group of figures can be seen on the beach in the foreground gathered around what appears to be a boat; they may be attending to nets or cargo. A similar landscape is depicted on Tate D19913–D19914; Turner Bequest CCXVI 181–181a.
