This sketch depicts the houses which line the quayside at Dieppe, a port city on the Normandy coast. Directly beneath the buildings are the initials: ‘Y’, ‘W’, ‘W’, ‘D’, ‘W’, ‘G’, ‘D’, ‘D’, ‘WB’, ‘Y’, ‘R’, ‘R’, ‘Y’, which are likely to be abbreviated colour notes standing for ‘Yellow’ or ‘White’, for example. Turner was at Dieppe on 11 and 12 September 1824, a few days before the end of his tour.
