This series of diminutive and intricately rendered views show the Meuse valley near the Belgian city of Namur. Turner travelled to Namur at the beginning of his tour, on 16 and 17 August 1824 (see Tate D19641–D19649, D20057, D20058; Turner Bequest CCXVI 46–50, 258a, 259). Beneath the second to lowermost view Turner has inscribed ‘Clearing off of Rain’ by the water’s edge.
