Here Turner records three rough views of the mighty limestone rocks which line the Meuse near the village of Samson, Belgium (see also Tate D20058; Turner Bequest CCXVI 259). At top left there is a swiftly rendered jotting of the quayside in the city of Liège. Boatmen have moored their vessels at a station on the quay ready to disembark with their wares or to load up their boats with goods for a new journey. For other views of Liège taken in 1824, see Tate D19598–D19599, D20061–D20064, D20095–D20099, D20105; Turner Bequest Turner Bequest CCXVI 24–24a, 260a–262, CCXVII 8–10, 13.
