This drawing, finely rendered in both pencil and chalk, was taken by Turner on a river boat, the scene incorporating some of the craft and vessels he would have come across as he himself plied up and down the Moselle. Figures attend their sailing boats at a sandbank on a river bend and beyond them are two villages, facing each other, nestled by the slate slopes of the valley. Turner has inscribed the word ‘Marten’ at bottom right.
