As Finberg recognised,1 this is based on a pencil drawing made on the 1798 Welsh tour, in the Hereford Court sketchbook (Tate D01317; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 63); see also the watercolour of about 1829 for the Picturesque Views in England and Wales (private collection),2 engraved in 1831 (Tate impressions: T04568, T04569).
There are slight pencil indications of tree stems at the right, suggesting that Turner had a balanced composition in mind; the England and Wales design makes use of a tree as a repoussoir device in a similar position.
