Turner scholar C.F. Bell suggested that the subject was based on the topography of Barnard Castle;1 it is probably a composite subject, apparently derived from on the scenery of the Welsh Marches, and similar in handling to Tate D00879 (Turner Bequest XXXIII H) in this grouping; see also the capricci of Blois and Tours (Tate D00673, D00674; Turner Bequest XXVII L, M).
