With the sketchbook turned vertically, Turner described a Gothic church interior with small figures at the top of this page, possibly from more than one vantage point. Gothic interiors recur in the volume on folios 34 recto (D23584; Turner Bequest CCLII 34) and 54 recto (D23621; Turner Bequest CCLII 54). Two sketches of a spire are featured at the bottom of the page, inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated. In so far as identification is possible here, the features of the spire broadly accord with those on the church at Caudbec-en-Caux, Normandy. Of all the Seine valley sights, Caudebec and its church were the subject of particular study in this sketchbook. For comparisons, see the list of associated sketches in the entry for folio 17 recto (D23550; Turner Bequest CCLII 17).
