With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled most of this page with a jumble of town buildings punctuated by tall Gothic spires. Although the cursory nature of the drawing prevents exact identification of this subject, the surrounding pages of the volume are much taken up with views of the medieval town of Provins, located some fifty miles south-east of Paris. For comparisons, see the list of pages featuring Provins provided in the sketchbook Introduction.
