With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the top left-hand quadrant of this page with wide looping strokes of his pencil and rough shading suggestive of foliage. The handling is too cursory here to suggest a location for this view, although this volume contains numerous landscapes taken in the countryside surrounding Paris and around the River Marne to the east of the city. For comparison, a list of these drawings is provided in the sketchbook Introduction.
