Whitewell is in the Trough of Bowland on the River Hodder, north of Browsholme Hall (see under folio 28 recto opposite; D01954). Another drawing made at Whitewell is on folio 28 verso (D01955), and a view of the chapel from the opposite direction is on folio 29 verso (D01957); the chapel is now St Michael’s Church. The building beside it, known simply as ‘The Inn at Whitewell’, dates from the late middle ages, and is the property of Her Majesty The Queen.
