Joseph Mallord William Turner A Group of Young Trees beside a Stream, with Hills and Buildings Beyond 1799

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 33 Verso:
A Group of Young Trees beside a Stream, with Hills and Buildings Beyond 1799
D01965
Turner Bequest XLV 33a
Pencil on white wove paper, 329 x 225 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
At the corner where the paper has been torn away the drawing, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, is continued on folio 32 verso (D01963). This subject cannot be identified precisely; it may show the banks of the River Calder near Whalley or, alternatively, perhaps the River Hodder along which Turner travelled to reach Whitewell (see folios 27 verso–29 verso; D01953–D01957). It may have been noted at the same time as the study of trees with a cottage on folio 49 recto (D01988; Turner Bequest XLV 48), which has a similar scale and general handling.
Technical notes:
As mentioned above, the lower right corner has been torn away, evidently before Turner made the drawing.
