Details of mouldings are studied below the main drawing, to the left. Made with the page turned horizontally, this was the basis for the untraced finished watercolour,1 engraved in 1800 for Thomas Dunham Whitaker’s History of Whalley (Tate impression: T05928). It follows the study closely; Turner added a group of boys playing marbles on the turf in the foreground. Others views of the abbey are on folios 31 verso, 34 verso, 35 verso (D01961, D01967, D01969), and 44 recto (D01983; Turner Bequest XLV 43).
